Short: Spotlight-style search bar for AmigaOS Author: Pancho Manera / PAL-N Studios Uploader: josemanera gmail com (PAL-N Studios) Type: util/cdity Version: 1.1.4 Requires: 68000+, OS 2.04+, 2 MB Fast RAM, a hard drive Architecture: m68k-amigaos >= 2.0.4 Distribution: Aminet Lupa ==== Press Left Amiga + Space, type a few letters, hit Return. Lupa is a search bar for AmigaOS, inspired by Spotlight on the modern Mac. It keeps a small index of your drives in the background, so as you type it shows programs, WHDLoad games, documents, preferences, Shell commands, drawers and disks (and, with Shapeless, the Mac's applications and documents). Return opens the selected one; Amiga+Return opens the drawer it lives in. It works alongside your game launcher, not instead of it: Lupa reads the game lists of PocketLauncher, iGame and TinyLauncher so any game is a few letters away. To browse the whole collection with covers and filters we recommend PocketLauncher (game/misc/PocketLauncher). * Runs on a stock 68000 with 2 MB of Fast RAM, Kickstart 2.04 and up. OCS, ECS, AGA or a graphics card (truly transparent on RTG). * Finds every drawer at any depth, with or without an icon. * Works on OFS, FFS, PFS, SFS, FAT and CD filesystems. * Leaves floppies, CDs and USB sticks alone unless you ask. * A power cut never leaves a broken index: the previous one stays good. * English by default; Spanish through the locale catalog. * Lupa-Prefs for the hotkey and look; Lupa-Update checks for new versions (signed, never runs by itself). Changes in 1.1.4 ---------------- * The index is ready twice as fast on a 68000 with many games. * PFS3: Lupa now lets the disk write while it indexes. * RTG: fixed the tilted background in 16-bit modes on some cards (MNT ZZ9000). * Launching a game no longer starts another indexing pass. * Finds games with several slaves and WHDLoad variants. * Reinstalling or updating keeps Lupa running. * Safer quit; fewer reindexes when a drawer changes a lot. The archive has two files: Install-Lupa (a single-file installer with the whole package inside) and its icon. Double-click Install-Lupa. Website: https://lupalauncher.com LANGUAGE Lupa speaks English. With Workbench 2.1 or later and Spanish chosen in the Locale preferences, Lupa, Lupa-Prefs, Lupa-Update and the installer speak Spanish: the installer copies the catalog to LOCALE:Catalogs/espanol/lupa.catalog (the folder name has an n with a tilde, as the system writes it). On 2.04 there is no locale.library: English only. INSTALL Double-click "Install-Lupa". It suggests the recommended choices (and says why): - where: WBStartup (recommended: starts with the Workbench and is ready with the hotkey), another drawer, or SYS:Tools/Commodities without starting by itself; - the hotkey: Left Amiga + Space (recommended), Ctrl + Space or Alt + Space for PC keyboards without an Amiga key; - start it now (it starts indexing in the background). If Lupa is already installed, it updates it in the same place: the hotkey, the settings and the indexes stay as they were. From the Shell: Install-Lupa [TO=WBSTARTUP|TOOLS|] [HOTKEY="control space"] [START] [QUIET] What it does: picks Lupa or Lupa.000 for your CPU; quits a running Lupa (waits up to 30 s); copies every file to a temporary name and checks it byte by byte before replacing anything (if the disk is full or write-protected, it says so and changes nothing); keeps what was there before in SYS:Lupa-Respaldo; never touches ENVARC:Lupa.prefs or the indexes. Lupa-Prefs and Lupa-Update go to SYS:Prefs. Log: Lupa-Instalar.log (next to the installer, or in T:). It does not touch the Startup-Sequence or the User-Startup. The single-file installer (Install-Lupa on its own) carries the whole package inside; "Install-Lupa EXTRACT=RAM:Lupa" unpacks it (this README included) without installing anything. UNINSTALL Double-click "Uninstall-Lupa" (or "Install-Lupa UNINSTALL" from the Shell): it removes Lupa, its indexes, its settings and the catalog, and puts back what was there before you installed it. Keep this drawer (or the installer) if you may want to uninstall later. UPDATE OVER THE INTERNET SYS:Prefs/Lupa-Update (or "Check for updates..." in Lupa-Prefs). It needs TCP/IP running. It downloads a new version only if it is signed by Pal-N Studios, checks all of it and installs it with the same installer (backup and roll back). Without a network it says so and changes nothing. It never runs by itself. Lupa-Update CHECK only tells you whether there is a new one THE FIRST TIME Lupa indexes by itself, in the background, at low priority. You can search and open things while it indexes: the bar never waits for the indexer. If it finds PocketLauncher, iGame or TinyLauncher, it can use their game lists (all together, without duplicates) and asks you in the bar: Return takes the marked option, the arrows change it, Esc leaves it for later. Until you answer, Lupa keeps indexing and you can search. "No, scan the disks" makes Lupa read the game folders itself. After that it keeps itself up to date: - when a folder changes (system notification; it waits 5 s and reindexes only that disk); - when you insert or remove a disk; - every 30 minutes while the Amiga is idle (68020 and better; IDLEMIN), a quick check that stops as soon as you touch a key or the mouse. WHAT IT FINDS Programs, games, documents, preferences and Shell commands, plus every drawer it walks through, with or without an icon, at any depth (up to DEPTH, 8 by default): type "recib" and the "Received" drawer some program made shows up. Each disk is a result too: "work" offers Work:. Game folders do not show up as drawers: the game does. DISKS THAT ARE NOT THERE Lupa never launches something that no longer exists: if you deleted it, Lupa drops it from the index and, if there is another one with the same name, offers it. If its disk is not mounted, it tells you ("The disk X is not mounted") without asking for it. Things on a disk you remove disappear from the bar right away. Disks that are not mounted are hidden (AUSENTES=GRIS shows them greyed out), and the index of a disk not seen for 90 days is deleted (PODAR). Floppies, CDs, USB and network disks are not indexed unless you ask (the "Index floppies, CDs and USB" box in Lupa-Prefs, INDEXAR_EXTRAIBLES=1 or EXTRAIBLES=DF0:,CD0:). KEYS IN THE BAR Arrows: choose Return: open Amiga+Return: open its drawer Tab / Shift+Tab: next / previous section Esc: close Backspace: delete a letter Del: clear everything PREFERENCES: SYS:Prefs/Lupa-Prefs Hotkey (Left Amiga + Space, Ctrl + Space, Alt + Space, Ctrl + Alt + L, or another one in commodities syntax, e.g. "control space"), look (Automatic / Transparent / Solid / Minimal), panel (Light / Dark / System = the Workbench colours) and position (Center / Top). "Index floppies, CDs and USB": off (the default) Lupa does not touch them; on, it indexes them while they are inserted. Use / Save: Lupa takes them at once, without restarting. An invalid hotkey is not saved; if Lupa finds one that is not valid, it uses Left Amiga + Space and says so once in the bar. On a PC keyboard (riser, adapter), Left Amiga is usually left Windows. Automatic = transparent on RTG, solid on AGA/ECS (transparency only exists on RTG). SETTINGS (ENVARC:Lupa.prefs; most also as icon tooltypes, KEY=value) The keys keep their original (Spanish) names. The hotkey: what Lupa.prefs says (Lupa-Prefs) wins; the HOTKEY (or CX_POPKEY) tooltype counts only if Lupa.prefs has no HOTKEY; CX_POPKEY= from the Shell wins over everything. For the other keys the tooltype wins. HOTKEY=lcommand space the hotkey ASPECTO=AUTO look: TRANSPARENTE / SOLIDO / MINIMO PANEL=CLARO panel: OSCURO (dark) / SISTEMA (system) POSICION=CENTRO position: ARRIBA (top) ROOTS=SYS:,Work:,Games: where to look (by default, every disk) DEPTH=8 how many drawer levels deep GAMES=ASK|IMPORT|OWN games: ask / launcher lists / its own scan LANZADORES=1:path|3:path launcher databases (1 PocketLauncher, 2 TinyLauncher, 3 iGame); Lupa writes it when it asks INDEXAR_EXTRAIBLES=1 index floppies, CDs, USB and cards (also the box in Lupa-Prefs). Off (the default), Lupa does not touch them: not even a floppy click EXTRAIBLES=DF0:,CD0: or only those AUSENTES=GRIS disks not mounted: greyed out (default: hidden) PODAR=90 forget disks not seen for N days IDLEMIN=30 idle check every N minutes (0 = never) CACHEKB=16 memory for reading the index (8 to 128 KB) MAC=0 do not index the Mac MACDICC=file dictionary of Mac programs (LupaMac.dic) WBLAUNCH=OWN always launch with Lupa's own method ICONOS=0 no icons (only the drawing for each kind) SALTEAR=Vol1,Vol2 disks that are never indexed Emergency brake: SetEnv LUPANOCX 1 (Lupa does not start) Debug log: SetEnv LUPALOG 1 (writes T:Lupa.log) (SetEnv LUPALOG RAM:x.log for another file; never in a drawer that Lupa indexes: every line would be a change and it would reindex forever) SAFE MODE If Lupa crashes with a Guru in the middle of something, next time it does not repeat it, and it says so at the foot of the bar: - reading an icon: that .info is not read again (Lupa.vol/IconosMalos; after three, ICONOS=0); - with the bar open: ASPECTO=MINIMO and ICONOS=0, and the history goes to Lupa.use.malo; - while indexing a disk: its index is rebuilt; if it happens again, that disk goes into SALTEAR. A power cut or a reset is not Lupa's fault: it is only noted (Lupa.vol/Caidas), and the indexes are always written whole. To undo: Lupa-Prefs (look), and ICONOS=1 and an empty SALTEAR= in ENVARC:Lupa.prefs. FROM THE SHELL Lupa INDEX [FULL] index Lupa TEST "text" try a search Lupa UIBENCH "text" time the bar Lupa LAUNCHERS game launchers Lupa STATS indexes Lupa QUIT quit Lupa Lupa RECARGAR reread hotkey and look from Lupa.prefs Lupa OPENDIR= open a drawer the way the bar would
